Legacy for Medical Student
sIn June, the Binary Medical Center (BMC) ran itβs first Re-Useable Menstrual Pad (RUMPs) training at Location: Yikuru Secondary School in Impevi.
Young women and girls are taught how to sew and maintain menstrual pads and good menstrual hygiene so that they can continue going to school after the begin menstruating.
This training because it develop awareness and understanding of how the female body works and highlights the importance of family planning & spacing. This reduces maternal and infant death rates substantially. It empowers young women and girls to continue their education rather than marrying and raising families at a young age. Now that they have completed the training, these girls can make RUMPs for themselves using available local materials. They can also teach others to do the same, enabling more young women to remain in school. They can even sell their RUMPs to earn extra income.
βI will have freedom to study and play together with boys, hence no school dropout. I will be able to teach other girls on how to make their own Reusable pads". Gladys Mercy, 18
The headteacher of Yikuru Secondary School said this to BMC staff,
ββThe country where they come from needs themβ, No country will develop without women, they need education and therefore they need to be protected, they need support. They need sanitary pads to keep them in school, not to drop out from school, they need this training for their future benefits. They need to be prepared as future leaders for their country... I thank CRESS and the Church for this wonderful training.ββ
BMC looks forward to delivering more RUMPS training in the future to empower young women and girls in education.
