This in an update on the Binary Medical Clinic (BMC) in Koboko. CRESS partners with BMC; we are proud to support the clinic and many of the staff whom we know well.
Since it opened in April, BMC has treated almost 1000 patients, including delivering 10 babies. The maternal and neonatal health classes have been welcomed by the community and reduced mortality rates. One mother told us,
"I lost my first two pregnancies at two months... when I got my third pregnancy I came to attend [BMC] where I found a big difference. I was also at two months and worried thinking I might also lose this pregnancy. But when I came here, I was amazed. All the staff are welcoming... I receive all the counselling and treatment I deserve. I am now 8 months pregnant and healthy."
Our Lab Technician, Apangu Paschal, has been busy performing tests in order to make diagnoses quicker and more accurate. Apangu also collaborates with lab programmes at the Main Koboko hospital to share data and research.
Alongside primary treatment, BMC offers Re-Usable Menstrual Pad (RUMPs) training to girls and women. Specifically aimed at schools, RUMPs enables girls to stay in school when they start to menstruate. BMC reports lower drop-out rates by girls after RUMPs training. BMC also delivers free Family Planning (FP) training and distributes malaria nets to the community. So far over 200 people have benefitted from RUMPs and FP. The clinic is planning more outreach soon.
